Background: Mrs. Shirley Temple Black, former child movie star, was defeated in her try for the U.S. Congress in a run-off election in San Mateo County, California on Tuesday (November 14).
Mrs. Black, who believes in a tougher U.S. stand in Viet Nam, was defeated soundly by a fellow Republican, Paul McCloskey, who called for immediate peace in Viet Nam during his campaign. Mr. McCloskey and Mrs. Black feuded all through the campaign and each filed charges against the other with a federal body that regulates campaigning in the United States, the Fair Campaign Practices Committee.
Mr. McCloskey had 50,634 votes, with almost all the returns counted, and Mrs. Black had 33,015.
As soon as the outcome was certain Mrs. Black went from her home to a restaurant where 200 supporters had gathered of a victory celebration. Smiling, she entered with her husband and children and addressed the disappointed crowd, Mrs. Black indicated that she thought her defeat was largely because of political inexperience and she said she might run again. HER EXACT WORDS: I'm going to not give up. This was my first race (election) and now I know the game is played. And I learn pretty quickly.
