Background: The leader of the French Socialist Party, M. Francois Mitterrand, has been in Israel on a visit which included talks with Israeli officials on the current Middle East situation.

SYNOPSIS: On Thursday, M. Mitterrand took time off from his discussions for a tour of the ancient Israeli fortress of Masada. The fortress was the last stronghold of Jewish resistance in the revolt against the Romans. The Jewish Zealots took the fort from a Roman garrison in 66 and held it against a Roman army until the end of the revolt seven years later. However, when the Romans finally broke into the fort, they found the defenders had committed suicide rather than surrender to them. M. Mitterrand also toured the town of hebron in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Afterwards, M. Mitterrand flew to Tel Aviv where he had a luncheon with various Israeli leaders including Defence Minister, Mr. Shimon Peres, and former Defence Minister, Mr. Moshe Dayan.

Later on Thursday, M. Mitterrand held a news conference in Jerusalem where he talked about the Middle East situation, particularly the problems of the Palestinians. He called for direct talks between Israel and the Arab nations to achieve a Middle East peace settlement, but said Israel should not be expected to withdraw from all occupied territories as a pre-condition for negotiations.

    M. Mitterrand said it went without saying that the Arabs had to recognise Israel and Israel must be assisted with all necessary means to remain in existence. During his three day visit, the French Socialist leader also had talks with Prime Minster, Mr. Yitzhak Rabin. He also met former Prime Minister, Mrs. Golda Meir, when he visited the Israeli Labour Party headquarters in Tel Aviv.
