Background: PANAMA CITY HAS BEEN QUIET SINCE SATURDAY'S RIOTING, THE THIRD OUTBURST OF ANTI-UNITED STATES SENTIMENTS IN PANAMA WITHIN A MONTH.

A MOB THAT NUMBERED ONE-THOUSAND AT THE HEIGHT OF THE DEMONSTRATION TRIED TO ENTER THE CANAL ZONE. PANAMANIAN NATIONALISTS CALLED IT "AN INVASION" -- A DRIVE TO UNDERSCORE THEIR CLAIM TO SOVEREIGNTY OVER THE TERRITORY.

THE U.S. COMMANDER IN THE CANAL ZONE ISSUED A WARNING TO THEM: UNLESS THEY GAVE UP THEIR ATTEMPTS TO ENTER THE ZONE, HE'D ORDER HIS MEN TO OPEN FIRE. THE MOB RETREATED ... BUT WHEN THEY REACHED PANAMA CITY, THEY BEGAN TO LOOT AND DESTROY U.S. PROPERTY.

PANAMANIAN NATIONAL GUARDSMEN ... UNDER INSTRUCTIONS FROM THEIR GOVERNMENT ... CLASHED WITH THE RIOTERS, FOR FOUR HOURS, THE MOB AND THE GUARDSMEN FOUGHT IT OUT. ONE-HUNDRED AND FIFTY (150) RIOTERS WERE ARRESTED AND JAILED. THIRTEEN U.S. SOLDIERS WERE INJURED.

AS FOR THE PREPONDERANCE OF FIDEL CASTRO SIGNS: IT'S BELIEVED THE PLACARDS WERE BROUGHT IN BY CUBAN NEWSPAPERMEN WHO TOOK PHOTOGRAPHS OF THIS "DISPLAY" OF CASTRO POPULARITY FOR CONSUMPTION IN CUBA.
