Background: As expected, Egyptians have voted overwhelmingly in favour of constitutional amendments, which among other things, allow President Sadat to remain president for life.

SYNOPSIS: The first announcement of the proposed referendum came only a week before the poll, and there was little advance publicity or debate. President Sadat was asking for two important constitutional changes, and other minor alterations. President Sadat could now remain in office for life. The referendum also provides that Islamic law be the basis of all future Egyptian legislation.

The estimated twelve million strong electorate were allowed to cast their votes in any polling station.

President Sadat himself voted early in the day, in his home village of Miet Abu Elkoum, near Cairo. He has used the referendum to place new legislation before the Egyptian people on a number of occasions in the past. Since 1976, there has been one referendum a year. There has always been a massive turnout, with almost universal endorsement of President Sadat's policies. In this last referendum too, Egyptians gave an overwhelming vote of confidence in their President Anwar Sadat.
