Background: As the Liberian tanker "Pacific Glory", which has been aground since Saturday (24th October) off the Isle of Wight awaits salvage, the British Department of Trade has opened its won Enquiry into its earlier collision with another tanker.
After the collision with a second Liberian tanker, fire broke out. Five seamen lost their lives, and a further eight are missing, believed dead. oil from the damaged vessel has so far been satisfactorily countered with special detergents, although the risk of coastal pollution remains high.
While civilian and British Navy tugs "stood to" beside the tanker, experts from a Dutch salvage firm made an aerial assessment of the damage on Monday (26th October) prior to discussions with naval officials at Portsmouth. The tanker's stern...already damaged by fire...now shows signs of rust as it settles deeper in the water. It's believed the experts favour towing the "Pacific Glory" to deeper water where the remaining cargo of oil can be transferred to another vessel. Before this could be done, water would have to be pumped from the tanker to refloat it.
The accident occurred just outside Britain's territorial waters, and it's not yet certain where an official enquiry might be held.
