Background: President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia has been in India for a two-day official visit during which he had talks with Indian Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi. Officials said the visit was significant because it came just before Mrs. Gandhi's departure to attend the independence celebrations in Rhodesia.
SYNOPSIS: A warm welcome awaited Dr. Kaunda when he arrived in New Delhi. At the airport to meet him were President Sanjiva Reddy and Mrs. Gandhi. Relations between the two governments have been close in recent years, and in 1975 Dr. Kaunda visited India to receive the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding. Newsmen took particular notice of Mrs. Gandhi; it was one of her first public appearances since an attempt on her life the day before (14 April).
This was Dr. Kaunda's final call in a two week tour which also included China and North Korea. He planned to be back in Africa in time for the independence celebrations at which Rhodesia becomes Zimbabwe on Friday (18 April). Diplomats in Lusaka saw his visit to China as a move to balance Zambia's close relations with the Soviet Union.
In New Delhi Dr. Kaunda's first visit was to the President's Residence where he held discussions with President Reddy. India has attracted increasing diplomatic attention in recent months, especially following the change of government in Afghanistan, and Dr. Kaunda is one of several heads of state who have since called on President Reddy and Mrs. Gandhi.
Mrs. Gandhi went to the Presidential Residence for her first round of talks with Dr. Kaunda. These preliminary discussions were followed by official meetings between the leaders and their senior advisers at which they planned to discuss bilateral and regional issues.
