Background: Eighteen firemen were injured on Tuesday (6 November) when a series of explosions ripped through a blazing tar distillery at Falkirk, Scotland.

More than 100 firefighters and 16 appliances from central Scotland were drafted in to fight the blaze. The holocaust started when a truck unloading Inflammable materials exploded. The ensuing fire spread to nearby straps tanks and refinery equipment. According to a senior firefighter, it's believed a petrol tanker was the starting point of the blare.

At one point the blaze was completely out of control. Firemen were withdrawn to safety as a series of explosions sent fire and debris missiles ripping through the air in all directions. Fire hoses were set ablaze as the man retreated before a lava-like flow of molten tar. Truck loads of sand were called in. They dumped the sand in the path of the tar flow in a bid to stop its progress.

A word caught fire and people living nearby were evacuated from their homes. The damage, after eight-hours was estimated at two-millions sterling. The fire was still blazing as dusk fell, but a senior fire officer said it was at last under control.
