Background: Argentinian Victor Galindez scored a sensational last round knock out win over Richie Kates of the United States to retain his World Boxing Association Light Heavyweight Boxing crown in Johannesburg, South Africa on Saturday (22 May).
In an all-action fight the first drama came in the third round, when Galindez reeled away with a badly cut eye. As Kates stood in his corner, a doctor examined the cut and declared Galindez was fit to continue.
The Argentinian fought back strongly when the bout resumed and he scored his first knock-down when Kates went down on the canvas for a compulsory count.
As the cut over Galindez's eye opened up, blood gushed out over both fighters and the referee. But as the fight continued it became obvious that Kates did not have the punch to knock out his opponent.
Then in the final moment of the fifteenth round Galindez suddenly swung - hard right to the American;s jaw and Kates crashed to the canvas. Although he rolled over at the cont of eight, he could not beat the final count.
Apart from the last minute knock-out, the judges said later that they had Galindez well ahead on points.
In the main preliminary bout South African Heavyweight Champion Mike Schutte had a convincing win over Dutchman, Rudi Lubbers. Schutte is reported to be one of the next opponents for World Heavyweight Champion Mohammad Ali.
With a style compared to that of former champion Rocky Marciano, the big South African showed surprising speed as he flung well aimed punches at the Dutchman.
With Schutte's massive left doing most of the damage, Lubbers was soon down. He hit the canvas another six times before the referee finally stopped the fight in the sixth round and declared Schutte the winner.
