Background: ON SUNDAY, (OCTOBER 20TH.), JOMO KENYATTA, KENYA'S PRIME MINISTER, RETURNED TO NAIROBI IN TRIUMPH, AFTER THE LONDON CONFERENCE ON KENYA'S CONSTITUTION. LATER AT A RALLY OF MORE THAN 150,000 - THE LARGEST EVER HELD IN NAIROBI - HE APPEALED FOR NATIONAL UNITY.

HE RECOUNTED THE CONSTITUTIONAL GAINS MADE IN LONDON, AND MADE HS AUDIENCE PROMISE TO KEEP THE PEACE, OBEY THE GOVERNMENT AND REFRAIN FROM SQUABBLING AMONG THEMSELVES. HE TOLD THEM "HE HAD THE BRITISH LION BY THE TAIL AND DID NOT WANT TO LOSE HIS HOLD BECAUSE OTHER PEOPLE WANT TO DIVIDE KENYA - ONLY THE IMPERIALISTS COULD AGAIN FROM OUR QUARRELS". ANSWERING THE FEARS OF MINORITY TRIBES, MR. KENYATTA SAID: "I GIVE CATEGORICAL ASSURANCE THAT UNDER THE CONSTITUTION, ALL TRIBAL LAND IS ENTRENCHED IN TRIBAL AUTHORITY AND NO ONE CAN TAKE AWAY THE LAND BELONGING TO ANOTHER TRIBE."
EARLIER, IN A SPEECH AT NAIROBI AIRPORT, MR. KENYATTA ENDED WITH THESE WORDS:
(AFTER FOUR WEEKS OF HARD BARGAINING ON THE CONSTITUTION, THE AMENDMENTS WHICH HAVE BEEN AGREED WITH MR. KENYATTA'S KANU PARTY (KENYA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION) REPRESENT A SIGNIFICANT SHIFT OF POWER FROM THE REGIONS TO THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT. THE OPPOSITION PARTY - KADU (KENYA AFRICAN DEMOCRATIC UNION) WHO DO NOT AGREE WITH THE AMENDMENTS BOYCOTTED THE FINAL SESSION.
