Background: The Prime Minister of Israel, Mr. Levi Eshkol, is on a three-week tour of seven African states. On 29 May, he arrived in Dakar, Senegal, his first stop of the first African tour to be undertaken by an Israeli head of government.

Mr. Eshkol was welcomed at Dakar Airport by Senegal's Minister of Justice, M. Alione M'Bengue and by the Israeli Ambassador to Senegal, Mr. Hannan Aynor.

The Israeli Prime Minister had talks with president Leopold Senghor, the next day.

Mr. Eshkol's tour - which includes the Ivory Coast , Liberia, the Congo (Leopoldville), Uganda, Kenya and Madagascar - is seen in some quarters as a diplomatic bid for support for an Arab-Israeli peace.

Another objective is to see how Israeli aid and technical co-operation, mostly in the agricultural field, with these countries is working out. At present, more that 1,000 Africans are studying in Israel, while there are about 600 Israeli specialists in Africa.

Mr. Eshkol has since visited the Ivory Coast and Liberia. He arrived in Leopoldville today (Sunday), where he will meet President Mobutu and the Prime Minister, Mr. Leonard Mulamba.
