Background: Drought must be something these creepy crawlies like for there has been a very hot dry period and it has produced a crop of huge caterpillars on one of a row of Fir trees in the garden of Joburg cameraman channon' in the northern suburbs, Bryanston..
Last night there was a big wind, the extreme edge of cyclone that hit Lourence Marques, it was not long before the children discovered these things on the ground beneath the tree. The family joined in to collect more as the African domestic help were delighted at the chance to get a great delicacy for free. Some of them were 5 inches long. Some tribes of Africans like to eat them, they contain much valuable food. Process of preparation, squeeze out the green foodstuff in the body with the hands, scorch in a fire briefly, lay out to dry for a week on newspaper. then its ready to eat. Needless to say I don't think much of having a tree full of these things as the tree must suffer.
