Background: Sardinia's Marco Scano became the European welterweight boxing champion in Cagliari, Sardinia, on Friday night (9 April). He won the title with a technical knock out (TK) in the second round over Pat Thomas of Walks.

The crown became vacant last December when Britain's John H. Straccy renounced it before his successful challenge for the world title against Mexico's Jose Napoles. In his bid for the tile Scano had to relinquish his Italian title.

Although he was considered a skilled technician with a good straight right and had the advantage of a home crowd behind him, many boxing experts predicted that the fiery Welshman Thomas would be hard to beat.

Of 21 professional fights Thomas had won 18, and was five years younger and had a longer reach and greater height than his opponent.

But as the bell went for round one of Friday's fight Scano went straight in and opened the attack with series of sharp, short punches. Thomas stumbled halfway through round one but got straight up and resumed the fight.

In the second round Scano kept up his attack and soon backed Thomas into a corner with more blows to the head. He went down and staggered to his feet as the referee went in to count him out. The referee decided Thomas was unfit to continue the fight and declared Scano the winner.

SYNOPSIS: Cagliari, Sardinia, and the first round of the European Welterweight title fight between local champion Marco Scano, and Pat Thomas of Wales on Friday night. Scano is in the light shorts.

At 30 Scano was five years older than his opponent, s well as being shorter. But this didn't deter him, and right from the start he was on the attack.

The welterweight title became vacant last December when its holder, John Stracey of Britain renounced it before he successfully challenged Mexico's Jose Napoles for the world title.

The second round, and Scano, who's widely regarded as being a skilful technician with a good straight right, kept up the pressure.

Scano had to give up his Italian title to contest this match and many critics predicted he would have a hard fight against the top rating Welshman.

Of 21 professional fights Thomas had won 18, nine by knock outs. During his pre-fight work outs in Cagliari, sports writers had been impressed with his style.

But into the second there was no doubt that the wiry Sardinian was just too good.

With a series of hard punches he knocked Thomas to the canvas. The reference started to count him out and then decided he was not fit to continue the bout, and declared Scano the winner.
