Background: INTRODUCTION: A bomb explosion in Teheran on Sunday (28 June) which killed many of Iran's political leaders, including Islamic Republican Party leader Ayatollah Mohammad Beheshti, was the most serious of several bombings during a week of violence in Iran. Nobody has claimed responsibility for the attacks which marked growing political unrest following the dismissal of President Abolhassan Bani-Sadr. In two previous bombings six people are killed about 58 wounded at a railway station at Qom on Tuesday (23 June), and a leading clergyman was wounded when a bomb exploded at a Teheran mosque on Saturday (27 June).

SYNOPSIS: A booby-trapped tape recorder went off in front of Seyyed Ali Khamene'i as he answered worshippers' questions in the crowded Mosque in a slum area of the city. No one else was hurt in the explosion.

One of his colleagues explained that happened through an interpreter.

A helicopter took Mr. Khamene'i to hospital. He was said to be getting better after a successful operation for wounds in his windpipe and lung. Twelve people were detained after the explosion but nobody knows who was responsible.

In the holy city of Qom, south of Teheran, a bomb completely devastated the railway station and sent glass and metal flying over a wide area. In all six people were killed and 58 wounded. The explosion occurred just after a train had drawn into the station.

Many of the injured were passengers who had just stepped onto the platform. According to Iranian State Radio investigations were under way into the bombing but it is thought unlikely that those responsible will be identified.

Meanwhile, the human toll in the bombings continues to rise. A car bomb killed seven people in the western city of Kermanshah on 25 April, three days after an explosive device planted in a minibus in North Teheran killed two. The latest attack was a massive explosion in the Teheran headquarters of the clergy-led Islamic Republican Party on Sunday (28 June). Many people were reported dead and scores wounded.
