Background: The Republic of Chad in Central Africa has started a programme aimed at keeping back the encroaching desert and increasing almost seven-fold the production of one of its main exports, cotton.

Thousands of trees have been planted to halt the sand's progress south, and last week the Government began the project which it hopes will yield 750-thousand tonnes of cotton this year.

City and town dwellers are being asked to assist in the "agricultural revolution" by helping to clear thousands of hectares of land and plant the cotton.

The Government has had to call on the city dwellers to assist as Chad's area of nearly 500-thousand square miles (1 million 300,000-square kilometres) is populated by only four-million people.

Government officials say the operation not only will increase the country's foreign revenue, but will provide employment for many.
