Background: Representatives from 14 Commonwealth sugar producing countries met in London today (Tuesday, June the 1st). They got together to discuss a common line of action before meeting tomorrow (Thursday) with Britain's Common Market negotiator, Mr. Geoffrey Rippon.
The sugar producing countries are building up pressure on Britain to seek solid guarantees from the Common Market if Britain joins. Britain has been the traditional market for sugar from the Commonwealth and Commonwealth governments are unhappy about the provisional agreement which Mr. Rippon has secured on sugar from the European community. The meeting, held at the Jamaican High Commission, discussed ways of getting a better deal. The chairman of the meeting was the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam.
