TRANSCRIPTS: (SEQ 9) PEABODY: "WELL, YOU MAY SAY THAT WHY I AS A NORTHERNER DECIDED TO COME DOWN AND TAKE PART IN A SOUTHERN DEMONSTRATION? WE'D LIKE YOU TO KNOW THAT WE JUST DON'T CONSIDER OURSELVES JUST NORTHERNERS; WE CONSIDER OURSELVES PART OF THE U.S.A. WE ALL HAVE THIS PROBLEM TOGETHER, THE NORTH, THE SOUTH, THE BLACK AND THE WHITE, AND IT WILL GO FASTER IF WE DO IT TOGETHER. I TOLD YOU ALL YESTERDAY, THAT I DID NOT ASK MY SON BEFORE I WENT AND TOLD THE PEOPLE I WOULD COME DOWN HERE."

QUESTION: "HAVE YOU HEARD FROM HIM SINCE?"

ANSWER: "NO. O YES I HAVE. I HEARD FROM HIM LAST NIGHT. HE CALLED UP LAST NIGHT AND I HAD A TALK WITH HIM, AND HE WANTED TO BE SURE THAT WENT THROUGH ALL THE RIGHT LEGAL PROCESSES AND THAT I DIDN'T GET OUT OF PRISON BEFORE I SPOKE." (SOUNDS ENDS.)

Background: RACIAL DEMONSTRATIONS CONTINUED FOR THE THIRD STRAIGHT DAY YESTERDAY, (WEDNESDAY), IN ST.AUGUSTINE, FLORIDA, WHERE TWO HUNDRED PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ARRESTED. AMONG THOSE JAMMED INTO THE TINY CITY GAOL WAS MRS. MALCOLM PEABODY, MOTHER OF THE GOVERNOR OF MASSACHUSETTS, AND THE WIFE OF A BISHOP OF THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF AMERICA.

MRS PEABODY, AGED 72, WAS ARRESTED ON TUESDAY, (MARCH 31), WHEN SHE PARTICIPATED IN A SIT-IN DEMONSTRATION AT A SEGREGATED MOTEL. NEXT DAY SHE WAS CHARGED WITH TRESPASS. WHEN SHE APPEARED IN COURT SHE PLEADED INNOCENT AND REFUSED BOND, STATING THAT SHE DID NOT WISH TO BE RELEASED AND WANTED TO BE RETURNED TO GAOL WITH THE OTHER DEMONSTRATORS.

AMONG THE OTHER CIVIL RIGHTS DEMONSTRATIONS WHICH HAVE OCCURRED IN THE CITY, FLORIDA'S CAPITAL AND A MAJOR TOURIST RESORT, WAS AN ABORTIVE FREEDOM MARCH BY NEGRO SCHOOL CHILDREN. POLICE, WITH DOGS, BROKE UP THE MARCH AND ARRESTED 72 OF THE CHILDREN. ANOTHER WAS A REPEAT OF THE SIT-IN AT THE MOTEL WHERE MRS PEABODY WAS ARRESTED. THIS TIME THIRTEEN PEOPLE WERE DETAINED, INCLUDING THE CHAPLAIN AND THREE OFFICIALS OF THE YALE UNIVERSITY.

WHEN SHE WAS LET OUT OF GAOL BRIEFLY, REPORTERS ASKED MRS PEABODY WHY SHE HAD COME TO THE SOUTH.
