Background: In Nicaragua the long road to reconstruction continues as nations from around the world deliver promised aid, and delegations meet the jut to discuss a programme for development. On Sunday (5 August) United States Senator Edward Zorinsky arrived with a planeload of Red Cross Aid. He was followed later in the day by an international Socialist delegation led by ex-premier of Portugal Mario Soares.

SYNOPSIS: Nicaragua is looking for millions of dollars worth of aid to help an estimated 500,000 people facing starvation in the war-ravaged country. On Sunday (5 August) a cargo plane from the United States brought some much needed aid and a delegation headed by United States Senator Edward Zorinsky. The Senator was greeted by Nicaraguan Foreign Affairs Minister Miguel De Escoto and Interior Minister Tomas Borge.

Government officials in Nicaragua are also negotiating with the Inter-American Development Bank in an effort to get funds to rebuild the nation's devastated economy. Meanwhile the distribution of food and medical supplies is a major task.

Later in the day (5 August) an international Socialist delegation headed ???ex-Portuguese Premier Mario Soar???s arrived in the Nicaraguan capital. The group plans to assess the country's problems after last month's revolution which ousted the right-wing ruler Anastasio Somoza.

Sandanist guards are still in evidence around Managua as reports of occasional shooting continue.

The Socialists were invited by the new Nicaraguan government.

Junta members Alfonso Robelo and Moises Hassan along with their colleagues were eager to hear from Mr. Soares and members of the delegation -- including parliamentary, government and party representatives from Europe, Chile and the Dominican Republic -- and to seek their advice on a reconstruction programme.
