    Background: ILSE GEISLER, THE EAST GERMAN WORLD CHAMPION, SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDED HER TITLE BY WINNING THE WOMEN'S ONE-SEATER EVENT IN THE WORLD TOBOGGAN CHAMPIONSHIPS AT IMST, AUSTRIA, YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). THE NEW MEN'S WORLD CHAMPION IS FRITZ NACHMANN OF WEST GERMANY.

    THE CHAMPIONSHIPS HAD RUN INTO TROUBLE ON OPENING DAY (SATURDAY), WHEN ICE CONDITIONS ON THE COURSE WERE TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING. COMPETITORS DEVELOPED UNCOMFORTABLE SPEEDS REACHING 45 MILES AN HOUR. TO MAKE THE RUN SAFER IT WAS CUT DOWN ON SUNDAY TO A DISTANCE OF 830 YARDS WITH A DROP OF 130 YARDS FOR THE MEN'S EVENTS, AND 820 YARDS WITH A DROP OF 110 YARDS FOR THE WOMEN'S EVENTS.

    NEGOTIATING THE 14 BENDS ON THE COURSE WERE COMPETITORS FROM BRITAIN AND SCANDINAVIA, EASTERN AND WESTERN EUROPE, ARGENTINA, CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES.

    ILSE GEISLER RETAINED HER TITLE WITH A TOTAL TIME OF 3MIN 2.87SECS FOR HER FOUR RUNS. HELENE THURNER OF AUSTRIA WAS SECOND, WITH 3MIN 5.82SECS; AND JANINA SUSZCZEWSKA OF POLAND CAME THIRD. EAST GERMANY'S UTE GAEHLER AND POLAND'S ANNA ZROBIKOWA TOOK FIFTH AND SIXTH PLACES.

    FRITZ NACHMANN'S TOTAL WAS 2MIN 18.61. HE MADE THE FOURTH RUN IN THE RECORD TIME OF 45.92SECS, WEST GERMANS ALSO TOOK THE SECOND AND THIRD PLACES. FOURTH WAS AN AUSTRIAN; AND TWO POLES WERE FIFTH AND SIXTH.
