Background: Local pressmen and foreign correspondents monitored voting in Greece's national referendum on Sunday (29 July) at a press centre established by the government at the Bretagne Hotel in Athens' Constitution Square.

The progress of voting was shown throughout the day on a results boards, including all 12,000 voting districts in Greece.

Early returns made it apparent that the government of Premier George Papadopoulos would win a sweeping victory. At one point, the "Nai," ("Yes") vote reached 94 per cent. When most of the vote had been counted, the percentage was slightly more than 80 per cent.

The vote approved abolishing the monarchy in favour of a republic and elected as its first president Mr. George Papadopulos, 54-year-old former artillery colonel, who masterminded the 1967 army coup. The President-Elect has promised to lift martial law and restore democratic institutions in Greece, including the holding of general elections for a 200-member parliament before the end of 1974.

Opposition leaders accused Mr. Papadopoulos of rigging the elections, charging that many voters received only "yes" ballots.
