    Background: Two Kenyans attained qualifying marks at Friday's (30 April) finals of the Armed Forces athletic championships at Nakuru's Afraha Stadium.

    The new qualifiers are Peter Lemashon and Washington Njiri.

    Visiting Nigerian runner Ben Onodiale also ran an Olympic time.

    The highlight of the successful meeting was undoubtedly the eight hundred metres, in which the first three runners home were all inside the Olympic qualifying mark of one minute forty seven point four seconds.

    President Kenyatta, who is also Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, was special guest at the championships.

    Addressing the participants, he said by taking part in sports, the Armed Forces promote sportsmen for which Kenya is known throughout the World.

    The Nigerian athletes participating were in Kenya for Montreal Olympic preparations. Earlier they had competed in Zanzibar, and mainland Tanzania.
