Background: More than 60,000 Italian chemical workers, members of the FULC, the United Federation of Chemical and Allied Workers, went on strike in rome on Friday (5 March). Many of the workers assembled at the Piazza Ss Apostoli, where they were addressed by several union leaders. They were protesting at increasing redundancies in their ranks, particularly those working for industrial giants such as Montedison. The banners they carried urged improved industrial relations between workers and management, and opposed cutbacks in the Italian chemical industry.
