Background: MR. GEORGE PAPANDREOU, THE FORMER GREEK PRIME MINISTER, DIED YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) IN AN ATHENS HOSPITAL. HIS BODY IS LYING IN STATE IN THE HOSPITAL CHAPEL UNTIL TOMORROW (SUNDAY) WHEN THE FUNERAL WILL BE HELD.

MR. PAPANDREOU WAS 80 AND HE HAD A LIVELY POLITICAL CAREER. AFTER HOLDING SEVERAL MINISTERIAL POSTS IN SUCCESSIVE GOVERNMENTS, HE BECAME PRIME MINISTER OF A NATIONAL GOVERNMENT IN EXILE IN LEBANON IN 1944, WHEN THE GERMANS CONTROLLED GREECE. AFTER THE LIBERATION HE RESIGNED AS PRIME MINISTER AND REMAINED ISOLATED UNTIL 1960 WHEN HE FORMED THE CENTRE UNION PARTY. HE WAS ELECTED PRIME MINISTER IN 1963. HE RESIGNED IN JULY 1965 AFTER DIFFERENCES WITH KING CONSTANTINE.

AFTER THE ARMY SEIZED POWER IN 1967, MR. PAPANDREOU WAS DETAINED, AND ALTHOUGH HE WAS RELEASED TEMPORARILY, HE WAS UNDER ALMOST CONTINUOUS HOUSE ARREST UNTIL SEPTEMBER WHEN HE ENTERED HOSPITAL.

MEMBERS OF MR. PAPANDREOU'S FAMILY DECLINED THE GOVERNMENT'S OFFER OF A STATE FUNERAL AND SAID THEY WOULD PREFER A PRIVATE ONE. HIS ELDER SON ANDREAS PAPANDREOU ISSUED A STATEMENT FROM STOCKHOLM WHERE HE LIVES IN EXILE, SAYING THAT THE OFFER OF A STATE FUNERAL WAS AN INSULT.
