Background: Leopoldville airport, Dec. 6th.....arriving to continue their African fact finding tour was a group of United States senators, and accompanying them, 28-year-old Ted Kennedy, youngest brother of American President-elect John Kennedy. The U.S. Ambassador was there to greet them.
Soon afterwards however...an ominous departure from the airport: fifty of Colonel Mobutu's paratroops leaving for the eastern province where already Mobutu's troops have fought on a small scale with pro-Lumumba forces.
In this area there is strong support for deposed - and now imprisoned - Mr. Patrice Lumumba, former Prime Minister. The paratroops were only going "to inspect the situation" said Colonel Mobutu, but the troop movement increased fears of a big civil war in the Congo.
