Background: By a very narrow margin of three baskets, Hungary beat Italy to win the Women's European Basketball Championships at Mulhouse, France. April 3. The final score was 52-49. France was third, and Belgium fourth.

In the first match of the final day, Switzerland beast Scotland by 52 baskets to 36. West Germany beat Sweden by 35 baskets to 26 in the following match, and in the match to decide third and fourth places, Belgium beat France by 43 baskets to 42 but France gained the higher placing on goal averages gained during the tournament.

Teams from Holland and Austria also took part in the Championships which began on Mar 27.
