Background: Fierce grassfires near Melbourne at the weekend threatened hundreds of houses. Aircraft at Melbourne's airport had to be moved to safety when a grassfire swept through a wide area of the Glenroy-Broadmeadows district. At one stage firemen were fighting the blaze on a two mile front.

Whipped by hot northerly winds the flames swept with terrific speed through HAPPY VALLEY, leaving a trail of smoking black earth behind it. Fire Brigades from surrounding districts and from Melbourne were assisted by police and hundreds of volunteers.

Stables at a stud farm near the bridge over MOONEE PONDS CREEK were set alight...and houses in the area were threatened. Several families moved out of their homes as flames licked to within yards of their backdoors.

This was the scene in HAPPY VALLEY... and with the temperature reaching a maximum of one hundred degrees it was an unenviable task for firefighters. At Melbourne Airport planes were wheeled to safety as fire threatened major installations. At one stage almost every part of the airport was ablaze and flames swept right up to the entrance of two hangars. Dense smoke billowed high into the sky and for a time the airport was closed.
