Background: By the narrow margin of five-point-nine per cent, Greenland has voted in favour of withdrawing from the European Economic Community (EEC). Seventy five per cent of eligible voters turned out for the referendum, but the final decision on whether Greenland becomes the first Common Market member to leave now rests with the home-rule Parliament. The vast and ice-bound territory entered the community with Denmark in 1973, despite a vote of 71 per cent the year before, against membership. Home rule came to Greenland in 1979, allowing Tuesday's (23 February) referendum. Fishing, sheep and mining are the country's main industries -- and many workers from these sectors took part in anti-EEC rallies in the capital Nunk (formerly Godthaab).
