    Background: NEAR KHARTOUM, SUDAN

Seventeen people were killed on April 16 when a Liberian aircraft crashed into a residential area shortly after take-off three kilometres (2 miles) south of Khartoum airport. Eight of the nine crew members were killed and nine Sudanese citizens died on the ground. After taking off, the pilot reported technical trouble; then all radio contact between the airport and the plane was lost. The survivor climbed out of the wreckage just before it burst into fames. He was reported to be Mr Joseph Dolvillie, an engineer. Mr Dolvillie said that one of the aircraft's two engines appeared to fail after the plane lifted off. Authorities were investigating the wreckage to find the exact cause of the disaster.
