Background: The European Seminar on Freedom of Information was opened in Rome yesterday (Tuesday). It is under the chairmanship of Signor Eduardo Martino.
The two week seminar, organised by the United Nations in the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation (F.A.O.) building, bring together delegates from more than 20 nations.
Among problems to be discussed at the seminar are press laws; the government's part in freedom of information; the duty of the professional journalist; and the function of the reader.
The meeting was opened by Signor Arialdo Banfi, Italian under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, who read the assembly a message of greetings from Italian President Antonio Segni.
