Background: The first consignment of Sahara petroleum oil arrived at Martigues-Lavera, a southern French port near to Marseilles, this morning. A total of 14,962 tons were discharged from the tanker ship, 'President-Meny', at a rate of 500 tons per hour.

The oil was loaded at Philippeville, in North East Algeria, from the trans-Algerian pipe-lines and trains starting from the oil-wells in the Sahara, at Hassah Messaoud.

Thirty-eight hours after leaving Philippeville the oil was in the process of being refined. Its quality is reported to be excellent.

A second load will be received from Philippeville on the ship, 'Savane', arriving at Martigues-Lavera on the 26th.March, and will amount to 1,500 tons. This consignment is destined for the refineries of Shell-Berre.

As this oil is either pumped or carried across war-striken Algeria many observers wonder whether there will be any interference with the flow by the Algerian Liberation Army, as happened in the Middle East to British owned pipe-lines at the time of the fuel conflict.
