Background: ONE WEEK AGO TODAY...JUST ABUT THIS TIME OF MORNING...22 COAL MINERS WERE KILLED IN A SEARING EXPLOSION IN BISHOP, VIRGINIA. THIS, OF COURSE, WAS ONE OF SEVERAL MINING DISASTERS IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS...TRAGEDIES, WHICH MAKE THEIR BLACK MARK AND THEN ARE TRAMPLED UNDERFOOT BY THE RUSH OF OTHER EVENTS. WE WERE CONCERNED, HOWEVER, ABOUT THE LASTING EFFECT THESE DISASTERS...THE BISHOP EXPLOSION, IN PARTICULAR...HAS UPON A SMALL MINING TOWN.

CRADLED IN THE LOVELY MOUNTAIN COUNTRY ON THE VIRGINIA - WEST VIRGINIA BORDER, BISHOP IS A TOWN OF SOME 2- THOUSAND PEOPLE. EVEN TO THE CASUAL VISITOR...ALTHOUGH FEW COME THIS WAY...IT IS OBVIOUSLY A COAL MINING TOWN. AND TO THAT CASUAL VISITOR IT WOULD SEEM A TOWN OF SINGULAR PEACE AND CONTENTMENT...MORE MEN AROUND THAN ONE MIGHT EXPECT, ON A WORK DAY, BUT THAT WOULD BE THE ONLY JARRING NOTE IN A DRAB, BUT PEACEFUL, PICTURE.

THAT...AND THE ENDLESS ROWS OF EMPTY COAL CARS ON THE PROPERTY OF THE POCOHANTAN (CQ) COAL COMPANY, MDLED PENDING AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE DEATHS OF 22 MEN. NO COAL COMING OUT...NO MINERS GOING IN. BUT GO BACK IN THEY WILL HAVE TO...LIKE IT OR NOT...

IN THE BACKGROUND, THE ELEVATOR SHAFT WAITS FOR THE MEN TO COME BACK...IT CAN AFFORD TO WAIT FOR COME BACK THEY WILL...

THE LITTLE CHURCHES IN BISHOP HAVE BEEN BUSY FOR A SORROWFUL SEVEN DAYS...HERE, ONE OF THE 22, JAMES HOWARD NEELEY (CQ), STARTS HIS JOURNEY TO HIS FINAL RESTING PLACE...BELOW THE GROUND. AND AS THE SILENT CROWD WAITS, A COAL TRUCK LUMBERS BY. AS LOVED ONES WEEP, THE CASKET IS BROUGHT OUT AND A COAL TRAIN IN THE BACKGROUND BELCHES BLACK SMOKE...

A RAINY SATURDAY MORNING IN BISHOP AND SMALL GROUPS OF GRIM, SILENT MEN FILE INTO THE HALL OF LOCAL 6025, DISTRICT 29, UNITED MINE WORKERS UNION. FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS...A MINUTE OF SILENT PRAYER...

...FOR THE 22 MISSING AMONG THEM -- PRAYER MIXED WITH A FEARFUL RESIGNATION. AND ON THE WALL, A BRAND-NEW PLAQUE...TO THE MEMORY OF 37 OTHER MINERS, KILLED IN THE SAME MINE ONLY 20 MONTHS AGO. ONE OF THE NAMES ON THE PLAQUE -- PAUL FARRINGTON, WHOSE WIDOW HAS MOVED WITH HER TWO CHILDREN SOME NINE MILES AWAY...AWAY FROM THE MINES.

A FEW HOURS LATER...ALEC ALLERTON (CQ) AND COSOLO WILSON (CQ) ARE UNITED IN A DOUBLE FUNERAL. THEY WERE NEGROES, BUT THIS WEEK IN BISHOP, VIRGINIA, THAT IS A COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT FACT...THEY WERE COAL MINERS AND THEY ARE DEAD AND ALL OF BISHOP MOURNS THEM IN A COLD RAIN, SOAKING A HOSTILE EARTH.
