Background: At least 20 people have been confirmed dead and it is feared that the toll could rise to 50 after a suburban train was derailed in Bombay on November 22. Seven carriages of the crowded commuter train left the tracks while it was moving through the city's Byculla station on its way to the nearby industrial town of Thane. Railway officials say nine women were among 20 dead and that more than 100 people were injured in the crash. Suburban railway traffic was halted while rescue work continued. No cause for the derailment has no far been given. In 1982-83 there were 21 major accidents on Indian railways in which 105 people died and 353 were injured, according to official figures. The country has one of the world's oldest and largest railway systems, which carries 9.6 million passengers on some 11,000 trains every day on a network covering about 61,000 kilometres (38,500 miles).
