Background: Temperamental Rumanian tennis star/(IIie Nastase) found himself at the centre of controversy during the Coca Cola Hard Court Championships at the British resort of Bournemouth yesterday (14 May).

On his way to a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 victory over Austrian number 1 Hans Kary, Nastase angered many of the watching crowd with a characteristic burst of histrionics. The first set included a 12 minute interruption while Nastase argued with the umpire about a line decision.

The tournament referee was called in -- and only after he ordered the match to continue did Nastase play on, with Kary complaining that he lost his concentration during the long delay.

Nastase then showed the other side of his personality, playing some brilliant shots and joking with the crowd as he completed and easy victory.
