    KOBARI HAD LED THE FIELD FROM THE FIRST DAY WHEN HE AND KEL NAGLE, AUSTRALIA, EQUALLED THE OLD COURSE RECORD EACH WITH A 69.

    KOBARI STARTED THE FINAL ROUND WITH A LEAD OF ONE STROKE FROM WILKES AND NAGLE, AND PLAYING PAR GOLF HE HAD INCREASED HIS LEAD OVER WILKES TO THREE STROKES WITH ONLY THE LAST NINE HOLES TO PLAY.NAGLE, WAS OUT OF TOUCH, HAD DROPPED BACK TO FOUR STROKES BEHIND KOBARI.

    ON THE FINAL NINE, WILKES WITH SUPERB APPROACH SHOTS TURNED ON A FOUR UNDER PAR 33 TO PICK UP FIVE STROKES ON KOBARI, GIVING WILKES THE TITLE BY TWO STROKES - WILKES 283; KOBARI 285; NAGLE 286.

    ON THE FINAL NINE, WILKES HAD FOUR BIRDIES IN HIS SCORE OF 33 (PAR 37).

    WILKES' ROUNDS WERE: - 73, 71, 68, 71.HIS 68 WAS A NEW COURSE RECORD WHICH WAS EQUALLED IN THE SAME THIRD ROUND BY KEL NAGLE.BUT THE RECORD WAS BEATEN IN THE SAME ROUND BY TETSUO KATSUMATA OF JAPAN WHO TURNED IN A 67.

    KOBARI'S ROUNDS WERE:- 69 (EQUALLING THE OLD COURSE RECORD), 70, 72, 74.

    NAGLE'S ROUNDS WERE:- 69, 75, 68, 74.HE WAS THE ONLY PLAYER TO BREAK SEVENTY TWICE IN THE FOUR ROUNDS.

    PETER THOMSON OF AUSTRALIA (FOUR TIMES BRITISH OPEN CHAMPION) WAS EIGHT STROKES BEHIND KOBARI AT THE START OF THE FINAL ROUND BUT HE FINISHED WITH A FOUR UNDER PAR 69 TO THE FOR FOURTH PLACE WITH 288.

    Y.FUJI OF JAPAN, ALSO WAS EIGHT STROKES BEHIND KOBARI AT THE START OF THE FINAL ROUND BUT HE FINISHED WELL BACK IN THE FIELD.

    M.BUSK, NEW ZEALAND, STARTED THE FINAL ROUND FIVE STROKES BEHIND THE LEADER BUT FINISHED WITH A 76 FOR A TOTAL OF 292.

    T.NAKAMURA ALSO FINISHED WITH 292.

    B.ARDA OF THE PHILIPPINES HAD HIS MOMENT OF GLORY IN THE THIRD ROUND WITH A 69, BUT HIS AGGREGATE OF 290 WAS SEVEN STROKES BEHIND THE WINNER.

    THE CHAMPIONSHIPS WERE WATCHED BY THE BIGGEST GOLF CROWD THAT SINGAPORE HAS SEEN - ALMOST THREE THOUSAND ENTHUSIASTS - WHO GAVE BRIAN WILKES A MAGNIFICENT OVATION FOR HIS BRILLIANT TITLE-WINNING FINAL NINE HOLES.

    SEVENTY TWO PROFESSIONALS AND FOURTEEN AMATEURS FROM THIRTEEN COUNTRIES CONTESTED THE EVENT, FOR WHICH PRIZE MONEY TOTALLED MALAYAN DOLLARS 28,000.

    THE WINNER BRIAN WILKES WON THE ITALIAN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE IN 1960 AND THE DUTCH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP IN 1961.
