TRANSCRIPT SEQ 6: ARMSTRONG: "I heard a voice screaming in a room, threw a rock through the window. He opened it and started coming out, and I pulled him on out of the window."

QUESTION: "Did you try and save anybody else ?"

ARMSTRONG: "I ran round there and kicked open a window. It was locked from the inside -- it was in a door that was never used, a big double door, I guess they never had any reason to use it. But I couldn't get the door open, and I threw a rock through the glass to try to get it open. But it was so hot in there I couldn't it."

Background: Seven patients died when flames swept through a two-story wooden convalescent home in Taft, California, yesterday (Friday) -- just a few days after firemen had condemned the building as a possible fire hazard.

Cameramen were quickly on the scene to film the blazing building and to get an interview with the attendant who rescued one of the patients from the building.

Six of the 14 patients -- most of them mentally retarded -- managed to get out of the building. Attendant Jack Armstrong describes how he rescued the seventh:
