Background: THE SCENE OF THE ALLEGED MASSACRE OF CHINESE SUSPECTS BY BRITISH TROOPS IN MALAYA 21 YEARS AGO WAS REVISITED YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) BY THE WIDOW OF ONE OF THE VICTIMS. AT THE SAME TIME, THE MAN WHO CLAIMS TO BE THE SOLE SURVIVOR OF THE SHOOTING -- 45-YEAR-OLD CHONG FUNG -- WAS FILMED WHILE WORKING AT A NEARBY TIN-MINE.

THE WIDOW, MADAME FU MOI, SAID THAT SHE AND HER HUSBAND HAD LIVED FOR 12 YEARS ON THE SUNGEI REMOK RUBBER ESTATE IN THE BATANG KALI DISTRICT.

SHE CLAIMED THAT A BRITISH PATROL MOVED INTO THE ESTATE IN DECEMBER, 1948. AFTER LOADING THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN ONTO A TRUCK, THE SOLDIERS OPENED FIRE ON SEVERAL GROUPS OF MEN, ADDED MADAME FU.

THE MEN, SHE SAID, INCLUDED HER HUSBAND, BROTHER-IN-LAW, AND SEVERAL YOUTHS ON HOLIDAY FROM SCHOOL. MADAME FU INDICATED THE AREA BY A STREAM WHERE SHE SAID THE MEN WERE SHOT DOWN.

SHE STATED THERE WAS NO QUESTION OF THE MEN RUNNING FROM THE SOLDIERS -- AS REPORTED IN AN OFFICIAL BRITISH VERSION OF THE INCIDENT NOW BEING INVESTIGATED IN A TOP-LEVEL DEFENCE MINISTRY INQUIRY.

CHONG FUNG HAD BEEN A RUBBER TAPPER ON THE ESTATE AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. AFTER QUESTIONING, THE 26 MEN HAD BEEN SEPARATED INTO GROUPS BY THE BRITISH SOLDIERS, HE SAID.

THE MEN HAD BEEN ORDERED TO WALK AWAY. HE HEARD GUNFIRE AND FAINTED. HE FEIGNED DEATH, AND WHEN HE WAS CERTAIN THE SOLDIERS HAD GONE, HE ESCAPED FROM THE AREA.
