Background: The official President candidate of Iran's ruling Islamic Republican Party, jalaleddin Farsi, has told reporters that the students holding the American hostages in the United States Embassy in Teheran were pioneers of the Islamic revolution. Speaking on Thursday (3 January), he also said that he was not against the visit to Iran of the United Nations Secretary General, Kurt Waldheim, but he wandered how the United Nations could be so sensitive to the holding of diplomats and so indifferent to the sovereignty of a nation.

SYNOPSIS: At this news conference in Teheran, Farsi said that those being held in the U.S. Embassy were not hostages at all but detainees charged with offences against international law. He explained that the students had simply moved to arrest people who had been involved in major crimes.

When asked about the prospects of a hearing for the hostages, Farsi replied that their trial would be part of a trial of American Imperialism and the regime of the Shah. he added that Iran had to teach a lesson to all the superpowers, tyrant regimes and expansionist governments. Jalaleddin Farsi, a forty seven year old university professor, claims to have the backing of three million members of the Islamic Republic Party including the Ayatollah Khomeini. He asserted that his victory in the Presidential election was necessary for the success of the Iranian revolution.

Referring to the recent Soviet military intervention in neighbouring Afghanistan, Farsi said that it was a repetition of the 1953 coup launched by the United States in Iran, and the Shah' fate now awaited the new rulers of Afghanistan. He also predicted that the destiny of the Red Army in Afghanistan would be the same as that of the American army in Vietnam.
