    Background: Upon an invitation of the Government of the Hungarian People's Republic U Thant, Secretary General of the United Nations arrived in Budapest in the early afternoon of July 1st. At the airport he was received by Mr. Gyula Kallai, Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Hungarian People's Republic, Mr. Pal Ilku, Minister of Education, Mr. Janos Peter, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Peter Hod, first deputy to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Karoly Csatorday, Permanent representative of Hungary to the United Nations as well as several chiefs of diplomatic missions in Budapest.

    Mr. Kallai said in his greeting speech:
    "We know that the united nations Organization and its Secretary-General have great responsibilities in preserving peace. Our government supports the United Nations and you to make it possible that this international organization of great importance can achieve this great task the maintenance of peace."
    In his reply Secretary-General U Thant emphasized:
    "I am grateful to the Hungarian Government and the Hungarian people for the touching and warm reception I experienced at my first visit to your country. For some time I have been looking forward to the opportunity to come to visit your country, to exchange our views with your views about the important international issues and especially about the problems to be solved in the United Nations."
