    Background: Thousands of Black Muslims, members of the Nation of Islam, gathered in Chicago on Friday (28 February) to bury their spiritual leader, 77-year-old Elijah Muhammad, who died on Tuesday.

    The mourners gathered at Temple number two on the city's south side.

    Among the mourners was the world heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali, the sect's most famous member. His trainer Herbert Muhammad is the second son of Elijah Muhammad. He is expected to take over the running of the sect's business affairs while his brother, Wallace Muhammad, becomes the spiritual leader of the 70,000 Black Muslims.
