Background: Looking bronzed after a 3-week Italian holiday, West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer flew into Bonn September 20. Among Government members waiting at Wahn Airport to greet him were Foreign Minister von Brentano, Interior Minister Schroder, Deputy Chancellor Erhard and Herr Globke, a secretary-of-state in the Chancellor's office.
In a speech at the airport, Dr. Adenauer did not comment on the Berlin situation, saying he must wait until he was more fully informed. He said he had already had time to look at a number of questions of international politics but decisions had still to be taken.
Herr von Brentano, who had just returned from a South American tour said earlier that he had received assurances of American determination to maintain a firm front in Berlin. There was to be a meeting of the West German Cabinet the next day, followed September 22 by a meeting of the Christian Democratic Party executive.
