Background: SCATTERED VIOLENCE PUT THE RHODESIAN POLICE ON THE ALERT LAST NIGHT (MONDAY) AS MR IAN SMITH, LEADER O THE REBEL REGIME, LABOURED VAINLY TO OUST THE GOVERNOR OF RHODESIA, SIR HUMPHREY GIBBS. LATEST EVENT IN THIS WAR OF WILLS IS THAT TODAY (TUESDAY) MR SMITH CUT OFF THE TELEPHONE TO GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

ALTHOUGH NONE OF THE VIOLENCE WAS OF A SERIOUS NATURE, IT WAS THE FIRST SIGN OF UNREST AMONG RHODESIAN AFRICANS SINCE INDEPENDENCE. POLICE REPORTED SEVERAL INSTANCES OF BUSES BEING STONED IN THE AFRICAN TOWNSHIPS OF HIGHFIELD, HARARI AND KAMBAZUMA BUT NO ONE WAS INJURED.

SIR HUMPHREY, WHO WAS ASKED BY MR SMITH ON FRIDAY TO RESIGN AND VACATE GOVERNMENT HOUSE, IS STILL IN RESIDENCE. HE SAID THAT HE, RATER THAN MR SMITH'S REGIME, WAS RHODESIA'S LAWFUL AUTHORITY. YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, MR SMITH EMERGED FROM HIS SECOND VISIT WITH SIR HUMPHREY SMILING BROADLY. HE HAD SEEN THE GOVERNOR FOR 70 MINUTES IN THE MORNING ACCOMPANIED BY THE DEPUTY PREMIER, MR CLIFFORD DUPONT AND THE MINISTER FOR LAW AND ORDER, MR DESMOND LARDNER-BURKE.

THE GOVERNOR ALSO HAD A VISIT ON MONDAY FROM A FOUR-MAN DELEGATION FROM THE OPPOSITION AFRICAN UNITED PEOPLE'S PARTY LED BY THE PARTY LEADER, MR JOSIAH GONDO AND THE CHIEF WHIP, MR CHAD CHIPUNZA. DURING HIS VISIT MR GONDO SIGNED THE VISITORS BOOK, AN ACT THAT IS REGARDED AS SHOWING LOYALTY TO THE QUEEN RATHER THAN MR SMITH.

IN LONDON, THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, MR HAROLD WILSON, HAS WARNED THAT ANYONE LAYING A HAND ON SIR HUMPHREY OR OTHERWISE ASSAULTING HIM WOULD BE GUILTY OF TREASON.
