Background: This morning a Air Force C-133 cargomaster landed on the Otis runway carrying a rescue submarine.
The plane, piloted by majors D.W. Nelson and Robert Stephenson, left Norton Air Force Base at San Bernadino, California last night with the 10-ton DOWB aboard.
DOWB, the deep ocean workboat from the General Motors AC Electronics Division, will locate and assist in the hook-up for the recovery of ALVIN, the scientific research submarine from the Woods Hold Oceanographic Institute.
ALVIN sank last week in 5,000 feet of water 120 miles south of Cape Cod as it was preparing to check the corrosion and mooring on a buoy.
DOWB submarine pilots Dick Hegeman and Dave Schiefen will join a ??? scientists when the sub makes its rescue mission next week.
