Background: Poland's primate, Archbishop Jozef Glemp, speaking on January 6, the day after he had been named Cardinal by Pope John Paul, stressed the need for dialogue between the church and state to ease the crisis within Poland. Archbishop Glemp was addressing the congregation at Warsaw's St. John's Cathedral. He was greeted on his arrival at the church by an applauding crowd and handed bunches of flowers. He was already wearing the robes of a Cardinal although he will not be installed until the first week in February. Speaking during the Mass, Archbishop Glemp told the congregation that a dialogue within Poland had to be a two-way process with both the church and the state authorities prepared to make concessions and listen to the other's argument. The following day (January 7) a group of former political detainees gathered in Gdansk to celebrate Epiphany. Although meetings of Solidarity members are prohibited in Poland, the former members of the now-banned trade union used the occasion of Epiphany to have a party and to celebrate Mass. The recently released leader of Solidarity, Mr. Lech Walesa, joined his comrades and later spoke to the gathering. He called on his friends to overcome the present problems facing Poland and said only brotherliness would get them through.
