Background: BRITAIN'S LABOUR PARTY LEADER, MR. HAROLD WILSON, RETURNED TO HIS PARTY HEADQUARTERS, TRANSPORT HOUSE, IN LONDON TODAY (FRIDAY) TO FACE A TENSE WAIT FOR CONFIRMATION THAT HIS PARTY HAD WON THE GENERAL ELECTION AND HE WOULD BE ASKED TO BECOME BRITAIN'S NEXT PRIME MINISTER.

HE ARRIVED FROM LIVERPOOL AT LUNCHTIME, BUT IT WAS NOT TILL MID-AFTERNOON WHEN HE COULD BE CERTAIN OF A MAJORITY IN THE 630 SEAT HOUSE OF COMMONS. HIS MAJORITY, HOWEVER, WILL BE VERY SMALL - POSSIBLY LESS THAN 10 SEATS OVER ALL PARTIES.

MR. WILSON WAS GIVEN A BIG WELCOME WHEN HE ARRIVED AT HIS PARTY'S HEADQUARTERS. BUT HE TOLD HIS CHEERING SUPPORTERS: "IT IS STILL TOO EARLY TO SAY WHAT THE FINAL RESULT OF THIS ELECTION IS ... NOW WE HAVE GOT TO AWAIT EVENTS ... I AM NOT GOING TO MAKE A COMMENT ON THE POLITICAL SITUATION UNTIL WE GET THE RESULT."
AT 3 O'CLOCK (1500 GMT) A RESULT FOR THE LABOUR PARTY GAVE THEM THE REQUIRED 315 SEATS IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS. THERE WERE STILL 11 MORE RESULTS TO COME AT THIS TIME.

SHORTLY AFTERWARDS, SIR ALEC DOUGLAS-HOME, LEADER OF THE DEFEATED CONSERVATIVE PARTY, DROVE TO BUCKINGHAM PALACE AND HANDED HIS RESIGNATION AS PRIME MINISTER TO THE QUEEN.

MR. HAROLD WILSON WAS THE NEXT VISITOR TO THE PALACE WHERE HE WAS ASKED TO FORM AN ADMINISTRATION, AND AS SUCH TO BECOME BRITAIN'S PRIME MINISTER.

AT 48, MR. HAROLD WILSON WILL BECOME BRITAIN'S YOUNGEST PRIME MINISTER THIS CENTURY.
