Background: Delegates to a pan-European conference on solidarity with Chile's ousted leftist Government called, on Sunday (7 July), for United Nations' action. It specifically requested U.N. Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim to "take the necessary measures to put an end to all violations of the rights of man in Chile". The two-day conference opened on Saturday (6 July).

The conference adopted several resolutions, including one calling for an end to "the internal state of war in Chile, or arbitary arrests, torture and summary trials."
Another demanded the freeing of members of the former Popular Unity Government, including Communist Party leader Luis Cory???lan, now held in Chilean prisons.

French Socialist Party leader Francois Mitterrand told the delegates on Sunday: "The action of those who dominate Chile is to reduce the people to silence. The objective of this conference is to break that silence."
The conference -- attended by several hundred delegates from various European countries -- was organised by the French Socialist, Communist and Unified Socialist parties, the leftist radicals, the main trade union federations and the National Education Federation.
