Background: President Siaka Stevens of Sierra Leone opened the new Kambia Bridge on Monday (20 February). The double-arched and reinforced concrete bridge in the north-west of the country was built by the Chinese, and is another link in the country's programme of laying down a national network of good-quality roads.

SYNOPSIS: The Kamhia Bridge, on the Great Scarcies River, is the second to be built by Chinese construction crews, the first being the road bridge at Mange, about 30 miles (48 kilometres) to the south. In his opening address, President Stevens said the Government would continue to give high priority to the building of trunk and feeder roads throughout the country. Only when all villages and towns were linked up could the country's economic and social goals be achieved.

The bridge is considered an important physical and symbolic link between Sierra Leone and Guinea her northern neighbour. The Chinese construction leader described the opening as another achievement of co-operation between the two countries.
