Background: President Joseph Mobutu and top level Kinshasa advisors travelled by river from Kinshasa to the provincial capital of Kisnagani last week to greet an official guest to the Congo Democratic Republic, President Albert Bongo of Gabon.
President Mobutu's official party took the opportunity of the 900 mile river journey (1400 kms) to meet Congolese citizens who lined the route and swarmed round the President's boat in canoes. Before leaving the Kinshasa leader met officials preparing for the coming Presidential and General elections.
President Bongo had arrived in Kinshasa earlier and flown to Kisangani where he was met at the airport by President Mobutu. Among subjects they are reported to be discussing are the strengthening of links between to two countries and the establishment of diplomatic relations at Ambassadorial level.
While in Kinshasa, President Bongo had said that he accepted his country's reconciliation with Nigeria and was ready to return former-Biafran refugee children to Lagos.
