Background: Kilimanjaro International Airport is now in its last stages and will be ready to go into service, according to Italian contractors, in about 8 or 9 months time. The airport cost 75 million Tanzanian shillings. The main runway is 150 ft wide and 2 1/2 miles long. The airport will be able to accept jumbo jets and hopes to capture the "northern circuit" game parks tourist package-trade. The project is being financed by a long-term Italian loan.

SYNOPSIS: In Tanzania. The Kilimanjaro International Airport is nearing completion. The airport was started in early 1969 and is expected to be operational in about 9 months time.

Part of the finance is italian and the total cost is estimated at 75 million Tanzanian shillings. When completed, the airport will be able to accept jumbo jets. The whole idea of the airport is to encourage tourists to land directly from Europe and North America.

Floors, doors, windows and other touches are yet to be completed. Big hotels in the neighbouring towns of Moshi and Arusha are also being planned to accommodate the tourists
The airport between Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru, is in the centre of the wild-life district of Northern Tanzania. The district includes the famous Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park.
