Background: Pakistan's Prime Minister, Mr. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, had discussions with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Hamad Al-Thani, in Doha, capital of Qatar, on Monday (December 10th).
Mr. Bhutto, who was on a three-day visit to Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Bahrain and Qatar, has recently expressed a desire for closer links with the Gulf States. They supply most of Pakistan's oil and have been increasing their economic investment in Pakistan in return for Pakistani technical assistance.
Mr. Bhutto visited Oman and Kuwait earlier in the week in the company of his Foreign Minister, Mr. Aziz Ahmed. In the past few weeks, he has sent envoys to more than 20 Arab states to rally support for the Islamic conference on the Middle East due to be held in Lahore in mid-January.
