Background: On the Isle of Man .. Henri Toivonen the Finnish world championship points leader entered Douglas just 16 seconds ahead of the field in the Manx International Motor Rally. September 16 was the first day of the three-day rally, with Scandinavian crews turning in good times. Second behind Toivonen was fellow Finn Ari Vatanen in car number-one, a Ford Escort. Car number-two, crewed by Finland's Hannu Mikkola with Swedish co-driver Arne Hertz, struck trouble early in the event and finished the first leg in eight place. Henri Toivonen the leader, in car number six, is only one point ahead of Mikkola in the race for the world title -- and will be hoping for success in the Manx to bring the crown closer within reach. Not long after the start, Swede Stig Blomquist in car seven had to retire with engine trouble, along with the Sunbeam of former French champion Guy Frequelin. Sweden's Per Eklund in car eight, the Toyota, suffered engine failure after four special stages. The reigning British champion, Scot Jim McRae in car number-three -- is defending his 1981 title, and held third place. The Manx International is conducted on the closed public roads of the Isle of Man and is the final round of this year's Open British Championship and a qualifier for the European rally championship.
