Background: Late on Sunday night (3rd February) rioting prisoners at Bathurst maximum security jail in central New South Wales, gave themselves up to prison authorities. Police said that the situation was under control.
Earlier in the day rioting prisoners took over part of the jail and set fire to and destroyed three-quarters of the jail.
Eleven prisoners were reported to be in hospital suffering from gunshot wounds, two of them in a critical position.
Police reinforcements were called in from towns up to 64 kilometres away to help quell the riot. It is believed that the fires started after a fire-bomb or some other incendiary device had been thrown into one of the prison blocks.
After spending the night under canvas, with a heavy police and prison guard, prisoners were transferred to other prisons in New South Wales, the majority being taken to Sydney.
The Justice Minister of New South Wales has ordered an immediate inquiry into the causes of the riot and how incendiary material found its way inside the prison. Rumours of dissateifaction among prisoners in Bathurst have been growing during the past few weeks. The disturbance comes at a time when the Builders Labourers Federation has blacked all work on a new maximum security prison at Long Bay, Sydney. They claim that the conditions in the new prison would be inhuman and they did not wish to be assocuated with constructing the new complex.
